August 2013

The ocean salmon bite off Eureka is still rolling along strong but as we approach September it’s time to start thinking about river season.  My first day on the Klamath will be September 6th and it looks like we’re poised for a fantastic season.  With the low, warm flows the salmon have been slow to push through the mouth for the last couple weeks but that will all change in the next 24 hours as elevated flows from Trinity Dam hit the ocean.  Look for a flood a of big kings to charge the system kicking the season into high gear.  In the meantime, there have been enough summer steelhead around to keep rods bent.

In the salt, limits of salmon has still been the rule and with the flat weather we’ve made some trips down to the Lost Coast for bottom fish.  The rockfish bite has been epic, there have been enough big lingcod around to keep things interesting and an occasional huge halibut.
