October 2013

It’s been another solid week of fishing on the Klamath with fresh fish continuing to push upriver.  Back bounced roe has accounted for most of my salmon this week with lots of fish running from 10 to 25 pounds and limits on most days.  While not producing as many bites, we’ve had some hogs grab sardine wrapped kwickfish including our biggest fish of the week that went 29 pounds.  There have also been some really nice steelhead around running up  to 10 pounds landed on side drifted roe and a fish pill.

The Klamath River has finally kicked into high gear and fish are pouring through the mouth.  With the low, warm flows we sawthrough most of September I think it may be a blessing that the fish were late as a fish kill that rivaled 2002 was a very real possibility.  The water’s now running cool and clean and the salmon bite is on in a big way.  We’ve had double and tripple hookups over the past couple days on kings running from 5 to 30 pounds with some adult steelhead and halfpounders in the mix.  October is prime time for this one and I think the writing is on the wall for some good days ahead.
