August 2015

The south wind that pumped so hard yesterday afternoon blew itself out and we hit a beautiful ocean this morning. We headed for the pinnacles with the hopes of skimming the cream off the morning salmon bite. We had steady bites for the first 45 minutes, boxed 4 kings and then things slowed down. After an hour of nothing we packed up the salmon gear and got out the swimbaits for a lingcod session. We landed on the good in the first area we tried and over the next couple hours ground out 18 lings (limits) and 45 rockfish.

The first storm system if the season follows over the north coast last night and though it didn’t drop a lot of precipitation we can hope it’s a sign of things to come. The forecast was for strong south winds today so we were a little unsure of what we’d find. The breeze was light and the ocean flat for the ride south and we were able to make it to the cape easily. Bottfish were the target today and the rockfish bite was wide open. 2 at a time every drop on the first spot. By about 10:30 the wind was starting to build so we opted to stay in close to the point where the weather was a but better. We camped out on one of my favorite rocks and fished big live baits for lingcod. We landed 10 and lost quite few other. Our two best lings of the day went 23 and 28 pounds.

Rockfish were the primary target for my group today so we didn’t spend much time on the salmon. Made a quick troll over the reef, boxed one and then broke out the jigging rods. The first few spots I hit for lingcod came up empty so we had to do some searching. Finally I got into an are that was fishing good and we boxed 18 of them for limits. The rockfish bite was good as well and we came away with 60 for full limits of them as well.

Salmon were first up today and they really didn’t bite well. We had 2 quick kings in the box, lost a double about 15 minutes later and then the bite died. Clear water and lots of boat pressure may have had a lot to do with it. The lings made a decent showing in the afternoon and our rockfish box was spectacular. Limits with some of the biggest vermillion and coppers I’ve ever seen. 5 of them that were around at or bigger than 10 pounds!

Salmon were our main focus today and they bit well. Not a real large grade but we had limits for 6 guys before 11am. Everyone voted to turn the day into a combo trip so we broke out the bottom fish gear and and stacked up a nice box of rockfish and lingcod. Flat ocean, fun group and good fishing.
